This WWDM LX4 transceiver operates over both installed multimode and single-mode fibre.
"This transceiver is the only 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard PMD that allows up to 300 meters transmission distance over installed multimode fibre", says Steve Skiest, Marketing Manager of Optoelectronics at Molex Fiber Optics.
"Molex's MuxLink LX4 modules provide enterprise network manufacturer's maximum flexibility in system configuration.
With the same module they can use existing multimode fibre infrastructures as well go beyond 10 kilometers over single-mode fibre.
To fully maximise end user flexibility, Molex is working on enhanced extended reach versions that will be very cost effective alternatives to the 1550nm 10Gbase-ER modules as well".
Each MuxLink transceiver has four 3.125Gbit/s DFB lasers, which are optically multiplexed to give 10Gbit/s data throughput.
"Since signal speed within the transceiver is maintained at 3.125Gbit/s, the electronics for 10Gbase-LX4 are simpler to implement than competing serial module implementations, which must drive a laser at 10.3Gbit/s", says John Dallesasse, Group Development Manager at Molex Fiber Optics.
"This allows the use of lower cost lasers and electronics and may enable operation at longer distances over single-mode fibre than 10Gbase-LR serial transceivers".
The MuxLink LX4 module is hot pluggable and packaged in the industry standard Xenpak form factor.
The optical interface for Xenpak is a duplex SC connector.
Molex also offers the 70-position SMT z-axis pluggable electrical host connector that supports the XAUI electrical interface.
Molex successfully completed interoperability testing on MuxLink LX4 modules with Blaze Network Products and Pine Phototonics in September 2001, promoting multisourcing availability for the LX4 PMD.
Molex will be sampling MuxLink LX4 modules in 2002.
Volume production will be timed to meet market demand which is expected in mid 2003.
