Save space with shrinking USB connectors
The new series of mini-BTM USB connectors from Molex take up only about 1/8th of the space of standard USB-B connectors.
Power connectors meet SSI specifications
The new DPS/MPS power connectors from Molex meet the Server System Infrastructure (SSI) open specifications for backplanes.
The iCool connector series is also available in a vertical configuration with either a through hole or SMT solder attachment.
"With the addition of the right angle configuration, the iCool connector series enables customers to use the same module for both vertical and parallel applications", said Jim McGrath, Director of Strategic Products, Molex.
"As a result, customers will only need to implement a new heatsink instead of an entire new module, lowering their inventory levels and applied costs".
In addition to saving board space, the iCool connector series incorporates a low loop inductance design, making it well suited for use with high output currents at high slew rates.
Also, its unique open-housing design allows for directional airflow to cool contacts much like a heatsink, providing a significant advantage in terms of current carrying capability.
Optional versions are also available for 2U servers and larger platforms with ambient air temperatures up to 60C.
"Since its initial release the iCool connector series has been well received by the marketplace", said McGrath.
"Currently, VRMs for the iCool have been designed by Volterra, Intersil and Primarion and are also available from volume voltage regulator manufactures".
The iCool connector series has 20 signal contacts for VR control and 72 power contacts to provide for 12V inputs and up to 130A output current, as well as ground return.
The number of signal contacts and power contacts can be easily changed to accommodate other power requirements.
Four fork locks secure the connector to the PCB to resist shock and vibration.
Fitting nails and a plastic locating peg are to be found in the SMT version.
The connector's unique reverse angle module latch notch feature retains the VR securely during shock testing.
The iCool's selectively gold-plated contacts provide electrical stability for long-term reliability.
