Two new types of connectors cater for the requirements of the new TransFlash memory card format, the world's smallest removable memory card system.

The new connectors are compatible with standard TransFlash memory cards, which are smaller than a postage stamp and can store up to 256Mbytes of data.

Molex's TransFlash connectors save 70% more space than the miniSD version.

The connectors are designed for cellphones and other mobile devices which use removable Flash memory cards to store data such as text, games, photos, video and audio.

Molex's TransFlash connectors feature both hinged and push-push (push lock/push release) versions that include metal shielding and integral solder tabs for ESD protection.

The hinged version is used in a similar way to a SIM (subscriber identification module) card, the latter not removable after installation.

It also has a slide lock that is easily activated by hand and stays open in various positions to facilitate the card insertion.

The hinged function also enables the card to be inserted from the top angle, making sequence pins for power on/off unnecessary; while the white colour housing provides good visual contrast compared to the usual black cards.

The push-push version includes an integral friction lock and cam mechanism for secure and user-friendly card insertion and extraction.

And finally, it includes a bevelled front portion to facilitate card removal.

Both versions are eight-circuit SMT designs which include solder tabs for secure PCB retention and additional grounding.

The push-push version is rated at 100V and 5000-cycles durability; the hinged version is rated at 10V and 1000-cycles durability.

Both are rated at 0.5A.

Gold-plated contacts offer superior electrical quality and are lead-free.

Inline SMT tails are designed on the inside part of the connector for space savings and windows in the shields enable visual solder inspection.

The push-push version includes first-mate/last break terminals to provide power on/off support.

When used with adapters, the TransFlash connectors are fully compatible with systems that support SD and miniSD.

The connectors come in embossed tape packaging and include wide flat areas to accommodate pick-and-place machines.
