Molex has been chosen as exclusive partner to manufacture, distribute and sell small form factor connectors using the patent-pending LumaCore technology.

Molex and LumaCon have recently concluded an agreement where Molex has been chosen as exclusive partner to manufacture, distribute and sell small form factor (SFF) connectors using the patent-pending LumaCore technology Connectors based on LumaCore technology are ideal for an entire range of applications that require highly reliable multiple-fibre optical interconnect solutions, such as in the aerospace, industrial and communications markets, where extreme environments require products beyond the traditional optical interconnect solutions

The broad line of LumaCore optical terminus products enhances Molex's comprehensive offering of single- and multiple-fibre interconnects by delivering dense optical interconnect solutions to the military and aerospace markets.

LumaCore products offer all of the service and design flexibility found in the single-fibre solutions, while enabling interconnect points to have nearly the same density as multiple-fibre ribbon architecture interconnects.

Under the terms of the agreement, Molex gains immediate access to LumaCon's novel, all-metallic LC-compatible interconnect product line LC2 and its circular connector product offering, which is based on industry leading MIL-DTL-38999 Series III connector bodies.

This new range will be marketed as Molex's MXL-38999 interconnect system.

"The investment in the LumaCore technology allows Molex to offer a full gamut of fibre optic interconnect capabilities for the rapidly growing military and aerospace markets", said Michael Nauman, President, Integrated Products Division, Molex.

"Combining our global manufacturing expertise and innovative product development with LumaCon's exciting LumaCore technology will help our customers meet their ever-increasing needs for rugged, reliable connectors in a broad range of applications".

LumaCon will provide direct design and marketing support, as well as transition for all manufacturing and technology to Molex.

The company also will continue to support planned product line expansions and custom product developments as requested by Molex and its customers.

"LumaCon's rugged connection system is ideal for customers who are concerned about the field performance of SFF-technology connectors", said Scott Christian, Product Marketing Manager for LumaCon.

"LumaCore technology truly innovates the SFF interconnect market and will allow the rollout of connectorised optoelectronics into applications where they were previously challenged due to performance concerns".

Christian added: "The LumaCore tuneable terminus system delivers less channel-to-channel variance, lower insertion loss and higher return-loss performance across a broader environmental range than any competing SFF technology".

LumaCon products are designed around the industry-standard 1.25mm zirconia ceramic optical interface, which assures availability, competitive cost and standard processing knowledge throughout the supply chain.

"Molex is the world leader in the deployment of advanced passive optical interconnects and cabling systems and thanks to this partnership our customers will benefit from a firm and stable supply of the technology into the future", Christian concluded.
