Motorola has shipped its first five billion 68HC05 8bit microcontrollers, making it the only manufacturer to date to have shipped such large quantities of a single product line At a conference in Munich, Germany, Motorola presented the five-billionth 68HC05 device to Electrolux, the world's largest producer of powered appliances for kitchen, cleaning and outdoor use

Electrolux uses Motorola's microcontrollers in a variety of appliances including refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and ovens.

Electrolux appliance brands include Electrolux, AEG, Zanussi, Husqvarna, Frigidaire, Eureka and Weed Eater.

"This milestone is further evidence of Motorola's long legacy and leadership in supplying microcontrollers to countless customers for a wide range of end products throughout the world", said Paul Grimme, vice president and general manager of Motorola's 8/16bit Microcontroller Division.

"While high-end microprocessors tend to gain the bulk of publicity, the 8bit MCU is the workhorse of the industry and is valued for its very cost-effective control functions enabling consumers to enjoy the benefits of smart products in the home, office and automobile.

In fact, Gartner Dataquest expects two-thirds of all MCUs shipped through 2004 to be eight bits in width".
