MCU and DSP features combine in Flash hybrids
The 56F826 and 56F827 are Motorola's newest Flash-based hybrid controllers.
This new PowerQUICC family retains software compatibility with the current MPC86x and MPC85x offerings, while offering significant power savings and increased performance - with speeds of up to 133MHz providing 176MIPS at 1.8V core voltage and 3.3V I/O.
The MPC866 family includes the Ethernet-only MPC852T, the DSL-focused MPC859DSL, the cost-effective MPC859T, and the feature-rich MPC866 communications processors.
"As the market leader in communications processors, we have learned that the right product architectures have a life of 10 years or longer", commented David Perkins, Vice President and General Manager of Motorola's Networking and Computing Systems Group.

"We will continue to provide our customers with a portfolio that offers a broad mix of performance, price and integration-which means keeping our successful longstanding products updated with process and feature enhancements.
With these advanced PowerQUICC I devices, our recently-announced enhanced PowerQUICC II products, together with the PowerQUICC III family launched earlier this year, we continue to expand the breadth and performance envelope of our communications processors".
Motorola's PowerQUICC processors include both a high-performance embedded PowerPC ISA-based core and a powerful RISC-based communications processor module (CPM).
The CPM offloads peripheral tasks from the embedded core while providing support for multiple communication protocols - including 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet, Parallel ATM and multichannel HDLC.
The newest PowerQUICC devices continue to provide a high degree of integrated features and functionality.
The MPC866 is available in a 357-pin BGA package at speeds of 100 and 133MHz - an ideal solution for integrated control and forwarding plane processing in broadband access equipment - such as SOHO remote access routers, DSLAMs, remote access concentrators, integrated access devices and gateways.
Also packaged in a 357-pin BGA, the MPC859T is available at 100 and 133MHz, and the MPC859DSL is available at 50 and 66MHz.
Both these products target xDSL modems, cable modems, low-end switching and routing platforms and residential gateways.
Designed for line card, WLAN and low-end controller applications, the MPC852T is packaged in a smaller 256-pin BGA and is offered at 50 and 66MHz.
Tools and software for earlier MPC85x and MPC86x PowerQUICC products supplied by Motorola and members of Motorola's Smart Networks Alliance continue to be compatible with the new MPC866 family of devices.
Motorola's MPC866 family of devices is alpha sampling now, offering a compelling balance of performance, flexibility and price.
Production is planned for the first quarter of 2003.
