SoCs integrate single- or dual-core gigahertz-capable ARM instruction set-compliant processors along with a host of I/O peripherals.

Building on the successful Marvell Discovery family of system controllers, Marvell has developed three highly integrated SoC devices as part of its Discovery Innovation Series The new SoCs integrate single- or dual-core gigahertz-capable ARM instruction set-compliant processors along with a host of I/O peripherals to offer one of the highest levels of integration in the industry

By employing advanced design methodology and process technology, the Discovery Innovation Series is fully optimised to consume very low power at 1GHz-plus speeds enabling "green" system design for a wide range of enterprise applications ranging from routers, basestations, storage and single board computers to high volume laser printer products.

"With the launch of these enterprise-focused SoCs, Marvell sets new standards for system performance and integration with very low power consumption for a gigahertz class processor core", says Dr Simon Milner, Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Group at Marvell.

"We believe these high performance processors can enable our customers to address a wider range of performance- and cost-sensitive applications by leveraging their existing investment in Marvell legacy ARM-compliant CPUs and Discovery system controllers".

"While optimising power consumption has been a key requirement for mobile applications for some time, a broader range of embedded applications are now tasked with optimising system performance inside a given power constraint", says Ian Drew, VP Segment Marketing at ARM.

"The performance and power metrics offered by the Discovery Innovation Series of SoCs, gives embedded system designers the opportunity to utilise the broad base of software available for the ARM architecture".

The Discovery Innovation Series family comprises three devices: the MV78200 with dual ARM instruction set compliant cores; a pin-compatible single-core version, the MV78100; and the MV76100, a single-core SoC specially designed for cost-sensitive applications.

These devices support processor speeds ranging from 800MHz to 1.2GHz and incorporate up to 512Kbyte of L2 cache per core, integrated x4 PCI-Express interfaces, multiple USB 2.0 ports, multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports, SATA and security engine - claiming new technology benchmarks for performance and integration.

With this unparalleled integration and low power consumption, the MV78K and MV76K families of SoCs are ideally suited for a broad range of applications across various enterprise markets.

Marvell offers complete development platforms for Discovery Innovation Series SoCs, enabling customers to start system development without waiting for their own hardware.

Development platforms are available.

Complete reference design platforms, including software drivers and board support packages for VxWorks, BSD and Linux provide a complete toolchain for accelerated customer development.
