Communications Blockset 2.5 extends the Simulink system-level design environment by providing more than 150 blocks to model the physical and link layers of communication systems.

Communications Blockset 2.5 extends the Simulink system-level design environment by providing more than 150 blocks to model the physical and link layers of communication systems New algorithms and wireless system models enable communications systems engineers to develop more accurate system-level simulations and specifications, reducing design risk for wireless, broadband, broadcasting, and satellite systems and semiconductors

The Communications Blockset can be used in conjunction with other MathWorks products, including the DSP Blockset, Signal Processing Toolbox and Communications Toolboxes, Real-Time Workshop and Stateflow, to perform realistic simulations of communications devices and links.

The latest version contains a new RF Impairments library, which allows users to model the impact of nonlinearity, phase noise, and other RF effects on baseband communications design.

New application examples of complete end-to-end communication links, including WCDMA, HiperLAN/2, IEEE802.11, and Bluetooth, provide an easy starting point for the simulation of complex wireless systems.

Additionally, the new CRC (cyclic redundancy check) library supports CRC generation and error detection, allowing more effective simulation of link-layer protocol.

"The MathWorks has advanced the technology for simulation of communications signal processing systems once again", said Dr Jerry Krasner, Vice-President, Embedded Market Forecasters.

"The RF library introduced in the Communications Blockset 2.5 will be particularly advantageous to those introducing wireless technology into embedded system products such as medical devices, while providing advanced functionality for engineers in traditional wireless markets such as cellular phones and infrastructure, wireless LANs, defence communications, and satellite systems".

"The latest enhancements to the Communications Blockset are the result of working closely with our customers to expand the scope of our communications design capabilities in Simulink", said Ken Karnofsky, Director of Marketing, DSP and Communications at The MathWorks.

"With these new features, communications engineers can now simulate performance-limiting component interactions earlier in the development process.

As a result, they can create system-level models that provide clear specifications for implementation in hardware and/or software.

Simulink also accelerates development by allowing systematic testing before building the device or system, resulting in faster time-to-market and lower risk of design failure".

Together, The MathWorks flagship products Matlab and Simulink are leading the trend towards higher-level design methodology for complex communications and multimedia systems, as well as the DSP and analogue/mixed-signal components they contain.

With the latest version of The MathWorks family of software products, R13, which included major upgrades to Matlab and Simulink, the company reinforces its commitment to engineers by enabling them to explore and refine their designs, allowing them to spend their time on the difficult and creatively demanding portion of the design.
