A new Student Version package includes the newest releases of Matlab and Simulink, the books "Learning Matlab" and "Learning Simulink", and a complete set of product documentation on a CD.

A new Student Version package includes the newest releases of Matlab and Simulink, the books "Learning Matlab" and "Learning Simulink", and a complete set of product documentation on a CD.

Also available are companion products with application- and domain-specific capabilities in areas such as signal processing and communication system design, control design and analysis, physical modelling, and computational biology, among others.

"By incorporating student versions of Matlab and Simulink as tools for teaching and research at my laboratory, we've been able to enhance the efficiency of both teaching and research in computational biology", said Dimitris Anastassiou, PhD, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of Genomic Information Systems Laboratory at Columbia University.

"For example, by using Matlab in my course 'Introduction to genomic information science and technology', students can quickly learn to write and understand simple programs in bioinformatics, even if they do not have any previous computer background".

"I particularly welcome the new Bioinformatics Toolbox because it allows my students and fellow researchers to easily analyse complex bioinformatics data, from genomic sequences to microarray data analysis, and speeds up the development and deployment of bioinformatics algorithms".

New capabilities and features of Matlab 7 enable students to increase productivity with a redesigned desktop that includes new programming and debugging tools, automated program analysis for code quality, and publishing of code and output directly to HTML and Word.

New interactive point-and-click plotting tools enable faster and easier creation of Matlab graphics, including the ability to generate code that recreates plotting sessions for later use or redistribution.

Additionally, support for integer and single-precision maths lets faculty and students decide which type of data best fits an algorithm, resulting in faster computations, faster access to data, and the ability to handle large data sets.

Simulink 6 includes a wide range of new and upgraded features that allow students to work with larger and more complex system models.

Student Version Release 14 now enables students to build complex models of up to 1000 blocks for simulating and analysing multi domain systems for control, signal processing, communications, and other applications.

The new version enables faculty and students to learn and use a tool that has become the standard in a number of industries including aerospace, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

"The MathWorks has always supported the academic community by providing faculty and students with the latest technology, such as student versions of our core software products", said Cleve Moler, Chief Scientist at The MathWorks and creator of Matlab.

"Student Version Release 14 allows academic institutions to leverage The MathWorks core technical computing expertise in a hands-on way that immediately impacts tomorrow's scientists and engineers".

Today, more than one million customers, many of them researchers, instructors and students at more than 3500 universities worldwide, use products from The MathWorks for technical computation, visualisation, programming, modelling, and simulation.

With added features and upgraded capabilities to assist engineering students and faculty in achieving academic goals, The MathWorks Student Version software provides future engineers with the industry's leading software for solving technical computing problems and designing dynamic control, signal processing, and communication systems.

Matlab and Simulink Student Version Release 14 is available immediately at a student price of $99 in the USA and Canada, and can be purchased online at The MathWorks store.

To qualify for purchase, students must be enrolled at a degree-granting institution and have a valid student ID.
