Embedded Linux moves beyond the command line
A new series of tool suites from Metrowerks should make life easier for Linux developers, who have traditionally used command-line tools limited to Linux-hosted workstations.
Each lab will be equipped with the latest wireless technologies available for development and testing, including wireless devices, messaging, wireless gateways and application servers.
Metrowerks' tools and services can help wireless developers through the entire development cycle.
For instance, a Java application developer could use Metrowerks CodeWarrior for Java, the first development tool to fully support Sun Microsystems' J2ME and PersonalJava standards, to create powerful Java applications for wireless devices, and then to test and debug the applications on a software emulator.
The application could then be loaded onto a real target device, such as a mobile phone, and tested using the powerful CodeWarrior on-device remote debugger.
Finally, developers can use the wireless development centres to test the application in a real network with a variety of different devices.
"As more and more Java technology-based wireless devices continue to come onto the market, developers will benefit from Metrowerks CodeWarrior for Java and Metrowerks' assistance in getting their applications ready for prime time", said Chris Hogan, Sr Marketing Director, Java Strategy and Product Marketing, Sun Microsystems.
"With its wireless development centres, Metrowerks will assist numerous Java application developers through the entire process, from development to testing to deployment".
Wireless application gateway (WAP) and middleware vendors can use the centres to make their software available for developers to use and test.
Furthermore, the centres provide a venue for wireless developers to meet with Metrowerks wireless experts, who can share their knowledge and expertise to further enhance or create applications for the mobile world.
"As a provider of business acceleration software, AGEA is incorporating our platform into the wireless network infrastructure for customers to develop and test applications", said Russell Glass, vice president of strategy, AGEA Corp.
"This infrastructure and the ability to test using a myriad of mobile devices will help customers to push applications to market faster and increase access to top-notch technical expertise".
"These testing facilities demonstrate just how committed Metrowerks is to the success of the wireless developer community", said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks.
"We already provide world class tools, but for wireless developers, that's only part of the solution.
The ability to test and debug an application on various wireless devices with a real-world network connection is crucial prior to taking that application to market".
The wireless development centres extend Metrowerks' wireless device support, bringing increased value to software developers using Metrowerks' development tools for Palm OS, PersonalJava, Java Card, J2ME, Sharp Zaurus, embedded Linux, DragonBall, ARM and Symbian OS platforms.
