Symbian suite features integrated target debugging
Metrowerks has begun shipping the industry's first development toolsuite to provide integrated on-device debugging support for developers working with Symbian reference platforms and development kits.
Metrowerks has begun shipping the industry's first development toolsuite to provide integrated on-device debugging support for developers working with Symbian reference platforms and Symbian development kits.
CodeWarrior Development Suite for Symbian OS, Professional Edition, Version 2.0, builds on Metrowerks' well-known C++ support for Symbian OS, and is the industry's most advanced solution for application development on Symbian based platforms.
Version 2.0 was developed in close partnership with Symbian and is targeted for Symbian, its licensees, their partners and independent software developers for the creation of system software and end-user applications for Symbian OS v7 smart phones like the Sony Ericsson P800.
The CodeWarrior tool suite helps developers shorten their development cycle and get their commercial applications to market more quickly.
The integrated on-device debugging capability in Version 2.0 was enabled by Metrowerks' porting of its MetroTRK (target resident kernel) to Symbian OS v7.
The MetroTRK, which ships with support for the ARM SPP/2 and Intel Assabet development boards, can also be customised for other commercial development boards and prototype or production smart phone devices.
"Legacy tooling for Symbian OS relied on loose integration of off-the-shelf products.
CodeWarrior for Symbian OS, developed by Metrowerks in partnership with Symbian, boosts developer productivity by building Symbian OS support directly into the CodeWarrior IDE and debugger, and enhances hardware integration by working with Symbian's semiconductor partners and phone manufacturer licensees to enable implementation of custom debug solutions", said David Wood, executive vice president, partnering, evangelism and research.
"CodeWarrior Development Suite for Symbian OS, Professional Edition, Version 2.0 has better integration than ever before, in addition to general usability improvements delivered through an upgrade to the CodeWarrior IDE".
For application developers working with Symbian device SDKs, Metrowerks, in conjunction with Sony Ericsson, has made the MetroTRK available for debugging applications running on the Sony Ericsson P800 smart phone.
In addition, the UIQ SDK for the P800 is included with the CodeWarrior tool suite.
Metrowerks is working with other Symbian licensees to provide similar on-device debugging support for their Symbian OS phones.
Developers targeting either development boards or smart phone targets benefit from the ability to view Symbian OS descriptors inside the CodeWarrior debugger as well as the integration of Symbian build components into the CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE), allowing easy configuration of Symbian's AIF builder, resource compiler, bitmap compiler and.sis compiler.
This new support builds on previous CodeWarrior Development Studio for Symbian OS releases, which provided Symbian OS project control, source-level interoperation with legacy toolchains, and batch build support.
"Our commitment to the professional wireless developer community is evident in our support for vital platforms like Symbian OS.
Symbian OS is the smart phone platform choice of all the major mobile phone manufacturers, and CodeWarrior is the most advanced application development solution for software developers looking to deliver innovative applications for Symbian and other wireless devices", said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks.
"CodeWarrior for Symbian OS is a key element in our wireless business, which includes software and hardware development tools for industry leading platforms, and professional services for wireless software developers, mobile phone manufacturers and network operators that allow them to gain a critical competitive edge in today's rapidly changing wireless marketplace".
