Metrowerks has begun a number of technology initiatives to help improve development processes and lower associated costs for developers in the transportation industry.

Metrowerks has begun a number of technology initiatives to help improve development processes and lower associated costs for developers in the transportation industry These initiatives include adding Rate Monotonic Analysis (RMA) support for the Metrowerks OSEK turbo real time operating system (RTOS), licensing the Unis Processor Expert technology, and supporting communication stacks from Volcano Automotive Group and Vector Software

Metrowerks is adding RMA capability to its industry leading OSEK turbo RTOS to enable efficient OSEK applications that are fully schedulable.

This means that tasks performed by the application can be scheduled to run on deadline, giving the application a high level of predictability and reliability.

"Metrowerks is a leader in the embedded tools space, as evidenced by our broad platform support across processors ranging from 8 to 32bit, and we're well positioned to leverage those strengths for the transportation market", said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks.

"Our announcements at Convergence this week demonstrate our willingness to reach beyond our own technology to partner with leading vendors in the transportation space and provide our customers with comprehensive, customisable development solutions that help speed design cycles".

By integrating RMA technology into OSEK turbo, Metrowerks is helping engineers design higher quality applications, and providing them with a means to design, code, compile and implement in one professional environment with support from a single vendor.

This functionality marks the first time a complete OSEK development tool chain with RMA capability will be available on the market.

The RMA capability is expected to be available in March 2003 on a range of platforms, including Motorola HC08, HCS12, MPC5xx, DSP56800E, and other popular processors.

"Having access to cutting edge development tool technology from Metrowerks gives us a distinct advantage in the market, because it allows our customers to begin working on applications in advance of our silicon, shortening their time to market", said Scott Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola Transportation and Standard Products Group.

Metrowerks has extended the design and development capabilities of the CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE) by licensing the Unis Processor Expert technology and making it a standard part of the IDE.

Processor Expert is a rapid application design (RAD) technology designed to accelerate development time by providing a framework for configuration and design of target environments.

The tool provides tested, ready-to-use components designed to be easily reused and retargeted from one microcontroller to another to help ensure highly optimised and reliable code.

Used with CodeWarrior tools, Processor Expert allows developers to create a new component, then automatically compile or debug within the IDE.

Processor Expert technology is available on the Motorola 68HC08 Special Edition processor and allows "point and click" configuration and management of peripheral modules.

The technology also includes complex rule checking, designed to allow users to start developing for new embedded architectures in a matter of minutes without needing to reference complex data manuals.

Metrowerks plans to include this technology in key transportation platforms, including the e500/e5000/MPC5500/MPC55XX family in the second quarter of 2003.

Metrowerks is partnering with two key vendors of communication stacks for the transportation market, Volcano Automotive Group, a provider of proven and comprehensive solutions for predictable and optimised in-vehicle data communications for the automotive industry; and Vector Software, a leading manufacturer of software tools and components for electronic networks in automotive engineering, specialising in developing solutions for Control Area Networks (CAN).

Metrowerks and Volcano are working to ensure CodeWarrior tools support the full range of Volcano products on Motorola architectures.

The Volcano concept guarantees predictable, real-time communications in the complex, multiplexed, distributed electrical systems of modern vehicles.

Metrowerks will demonstrate a LIN (Local Interconnect Network) development system using CodeWarrior with LIN network software and analysis tools from the Volcano Automotive Group in booth 949 on the Convergence show floor.

Volcano also announced the immediate availability of CAN software for Motorola HCS12 targets using CodeWarrior tools.

The range of Vector CAN software is now fully supported by CodeWarrior tools and build environments on key 8, 16, and 32bit Motorola platforms.

The interoperability of these tools means that customers can build applications knowing the complete tool chain has been tested and verified.

In addition, embedded systems tool provider Dspace is launching TargetLink Code Generator with support for the Metrowerks OSEK turbo RTOS.

TargetLink, which will also be demonstrated in the Metrowerks booth at Convergence, is a target-aware production code generator for deeply embedded applications.

Dspace is expected to release in early 2003 a version of TargetLink that directly generates code for Metrowerks OSEK turbo, helping users significantly reduce the learning curve, speed up development processes and produce higher software quality.
