The Embedded Linux Consortium has elected Metrowerks Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Linux Solutions Group, Berardino Baratta to its board of directors.
In this leadership position, Baratta plans to help the organisation's effort toward an open and unified standard for embedded Linux distributions.
The Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC) is a non-profit, vendor-neutral trade association focused on the advancement, promotion and standardisation of the Linux operating system throughout the embedded, applied and appliance computing markets.
The organisation's membership consists of worldwide corporations, vendors and individuals working together to establish Linux as a primary operating system choice for developers designing embedded systems.
"Representation from the leading companies and experts in the embedded Linux space is critical for the success of the ELC", said Murry Shohat, Executive Director, Embedded Linux Consortium.
"Metrowerks' Berardino Baratta is a forward-thinking opinion leader on embedded Linux issues, and our organisation stands to benefit from his insight and leadership".
According to Baratta, Metrowerks sees the enormous opportunity that the Linux operating system offers to manufacturers of embedded devices and the companies that supply them.
"Metrowerks is committed to realising the opportunities that consistency in embedded Linux standards can offer", said Baratta.
"Establishing standard Linux profiles will help solutions vendors like Metrowerks better meet manufacturers' demands for market-ready embedded Linux technology".
In addition to his duties as Chief Technical Officer, Berardino Baratta also leads Metrowerks' Linux Solutions Group.
Baratta joined Metrowerks in 1992, playing an instrumental role in the company's early growth and success.
In 1996, he was appointed Vice President of Research and Development, and led the engineering team in the creation of new products for the embedded, consumer and gaming markets.
In 1999, Baratta played a key role in the acquisition and successful integration of Metrowerks into Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS), and in 2000 he was appointed Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Core Technologies Group, where he focused on driving strategy and the licensing of Metrowerks' core technologies to outside parties.
Baratta graduated from McGill University, where he earned a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering with honours.
