Cards can be housed in either a Type II or III card frame assembly.
The thin profile of the former is proving increasingly popular in allowing two cards to fit in stacked formation in the dual slot PCMCIA ports commonly featured on laptop PCs.
One area where Bluetooth cards are expected to be popular is in the retrofitting of existing laptops with the wireless capability.
The Type II cards comprise only three parts (two covers and a frame) and come with standard socket connector, integral ESD clips and strong tabs to ensure accurate attachment to the frame, but enabling rework of the card if required.
An antenna housing is integrated on the back of the card.
Another possibility is the inclusion of an LED window in the card kit, to signal to the user that a Bluetooth network has been detected in the vicinity, and the card activated, for instance.
An established supplier of PCMCIA card kits and adaptors, 3M has worked in close co-operation with a number of card developers.
One customer has recently deployed PCMCIA cards for use in wireless systems based around the DECT standard.
3M also can provide a range of PC card adapters for a variety of interfaces including Multimedia, CompactFlash and others.
