Tool simplifies FPGA/DSP infrastructure
Dimetalk is a novel tool for the rapid creation and modification of the communications infrastructure for FPGA-based DSP systems.
Nallatech will be showcasing its new Dimetalk tool for the rapid creation and modification of the communications infrastructure for FPGA-based DSP systems when it joins Xilinx and other industry leaders in sponsoring a series of "Programmable world" workshops throughout North America and Europe in September The first US workshop will take place in San Jose on 3rd September 2003 and the first European seminar is in Stuttgart on 9th September

Although many design entry tools exist today for creating, simulating and verifying the algorithms for applications implemented in scalable FPGA-based DSP systems, creating the communications infrastructure - both control and dataflow - for these algorithmic processes remains complicated and time consuming.
Recent estimates show that algorithm/application development takes 20% of the design time while the communication infrastructure takes up to 80% of the time.
Dimetalk automatically builds a packet-based network composed of nodes, routers, bridges and edges from a simple GUI.
Dimetalk automatically generates synthesised code for this high-performance network, allowing data to move between user-defined hardware within an FPGA, between FPGAs, and between an FPGA and a host/PCI bridge.
The designer simply inserts the application code into the appropriate areas within the Dimetalk-generated network, thereby providing yet another layer of abstraction between the programmer and HDL design.
According to Dr Malachy Devlin, CTO, Nallatech: " Once implemented, modifying the communication infrastructure can be a nightmare for designers and this has been the driver in Nallatech developing Dimetalk.
Dimetalk is a graphical design tool that allows designers to automatically generate the communications cores and required RTL code within an FPGA, amongst multiple FPGAs and from FPGA to host.
This is the first system management tool that allows the rapid creation and modification of the communications infrastructure for FPGA-based DSP systems".
