National Semiconductor has announced a family of supervisory ICs with a variety of factory-programmable features that can be configured in hundreds of possible combinations Housed in the chip-scale micro SMD package - the world's smallest - the LM3700 family uses EEPROM technology to perform a range of functions in any of 281 threshold voltages

Power-on reset is asserted during power-up, power-down and brownout conditions.

RESET (bar) is guaranteed down to a supply voltage (Vcc) of 1.0V.

Four reset timeout periods provide maximum flexibility for system timing requirements, and a manual RESET input is provided.

The devices feature four output types: CMOS totempole or open drain; each active high or active low.

A power fail comparator is provided for power fail warning, or to monitor a second input voltage guarding the system against catastrophic blackout/brownout conditions.

Each device has a watchdog with separate output and choice of four timeout periods.

Also a low-line output feature gives an advanced warning of impending power failure, thereby enabling safe system shutdown.

"National's EEPROM technology gives customers extraordinary flexibility by making it possible for them to select the precise combination of supervisory functions they need for a specific applications", said Monika Abele, National's marketing engineer of power management products.

"EEPROM technology also shortens our customers' time-to-market by allowing us to factory program a custom set of supervisory functions and deliver prototypes within two weeks".

The LM3700 supervisory family is designed to monitor power supplies in intelligent instruments, cellular phones, computers, PDAs, pagers and any other systems containing microprocessors, microcontrollers or DSPs.

With an ambient operating temperature range from -40 to +85C, LM3700 supervisory ICs are also suited for industrial and automotive applications.

The LM3700 family of supervisory ICs is immune to short voltage transients.

They are designed to monitor power supplies and battery-controlled functions in systems without backup batteries.

Reset threshold accuracy is an ultra-low +/-0.5% at room temperature and +/-2.0% over the ambient operating temperature range, while keeping quiescent current at a low 28uA (typical).

As the LM3700 family can be programmed to hundreds of different reset threshold voltages between 2.2 and 5.0V in 10mV increments, they can be used to monitor power supplies of varying tolerances.

Available now in production quantities, the LM3700 family includes 14 standard combinations (LM3700 to LM3713) or hundreds of possible factory-programmed customised versions housed in 9-bump micro SMD or MSOP-10 packages.
