"Europe maintains its design leadership position in communications, and is a global technology driver in the automotive, industrial and ultra-portable segments", said Kirk Pond, president, CEO and chairman of the board of Fairchild Semiconductor.
"While Europe has seen the migration of manufacturing to Asia in some segments, it is important to remember that the region still has a strong manufacturing base in the automotive, industrial and lighting segments.
The semiconductor industry's total available market in Europe equalled $29.5 billion in 2002 and should reach $42.1 billion in 2004".
Fairchild expects its target of 7 to 8% share in Europe will support its global goal to capture 10% market share in its target multimarket segments.
"Fairchild offers the broadest portfolio of high performance power products - allowing us to provide our customers with complete power solutions critical to the European market", said Pond.
"We're building the industry's strongest Power Franchise on a foundation of the four pillars of power.
Fairchild provides solutions to meet the technology needs of power management, power conversion, power distribution and power minimisation.
These capabilities will become increasingly critical as the world increases its dependency on electronics.
Our focus on power, aimed at the key segments we've identified in Europe, will place Fairchild in the position we aspire to".
Pond made his comments while visiting Europe to open the company's enlarged regional headquarters in Wootton Bassett, UK - which will house sales, marketing, finance and administrative functions.
Fairchild also announced plans to enhance its Fuerstenfeldbruck, Germany offices by establishing a new Centre of Excellence (COE) there.
The COE, slated to open by the end of the year, will house dedicated teams of application and system engineers working closely with customers on next generation applications in the automotive and industrial segments.
