A new Webench Signal-Path Designer toolset provides engineers with an easy-to-use tool to select, design and evaluate critical data convertor and amplifier/filter components and circuits.

The new Webench Signal-Path Designer toolset from National Semiconductor provides engineers with an easy-to-use tool to select, design and evaluate critical data convertor and amplifier/filter components and circuits National's expansion of its online design environment pairs its newly released low power consumption general-purpose analogue-to-digital convertors (ADCs) with its vast portfolio of operational amplifiers to create more than 10,000 optimised signal-path solutions

An online demonstration shows the tool creating an optimised 12bit, 1Msample/s signal path in just 2min.

Designing signal paths is a known art-form where analogue experts select resolution, sampling speed and filtering required by their desired system performance.

The effects of noise, impedance, signal-level matching and power usage all play a significant role.

"The quality of the signal path is determined by the expertise of the designer and the performance of the components selected", said Antonio Visconti, Product Line Director of National's Data Conversion Systems Group.

"National's Signal-Path Designer tool helps both expert and novice match our newest low power consumption ADCs with the best filter and amplifier in a complete design in a matter of minutes".

The Signal-Path Designer tool offers an intuitive, step-by-step guide to balance the resolution, speed and power consumption of a performance-matched ADC with the ideal filters, passive components and amplifier to create the optimal performance ADC/amplifier circuit.

The tool also provides filter simulations for both the ideal and device models for comparison purposes.

"National is dedicated to providing excellent signal-path solutions for our customers", said Phil Gibson, Vice President, Corporate Marketing at National Semiconductor.

"National's broad array of ADCs offers the industry's best power consumption in the 50Ksample/s to 1Msample/s speed range".

"Customers can pair these ADCs with our superior op amps to tailor thousands of designs for their requirements and achieve superior performance in a matter of minutes".

National Semiconductor offers a broad range of general-purpose and high-speed ADCs ranging from kilosample to gigasample per second sampling rates.

National's recently announced general-purpose family, available for selection and testing in the Webench Signal-Path Designer toolset, consists of 36 different 8, 10 and 12bit ADCs available in one-, two-, four- and eight-channel configurations.

These ADCs offer guaranteed performance across three speed ranges between 50Ksample/s and 1Msample/s.

They are also pin- and function-compatible within a specific channel configuration, which allows designers to easily migrate across resolutions and speeds.

National's high-speed data conversion products, with speeds from 1Msample/s to multiple gigasamples per second, will be added to the Webench Signal Path Designer toolset in the next year.

National's Webench environment eliminates the need for a design engineer to perform tedious hand calculations and includes extensive online tutorials in analogue design.

The tools offer instant access to the latest Spice models, parametric data and package information, enabling designers to simultaneously compare the performance of multiple devices in multiple circuit requirements.

48-hour delivery is available on all National products with the Webench environment.
