Serdes chipset saves display system
costs
A new high-speed LVDS serialiser/deserialiser chipset serialises 24bit data over a single differential pair in flat-panel display applications.
National Semiconductor has introduced a new high-speed low-voltage differential signalling (LVDS) serialiser/deserialiser (serdes) chipset that serialises 24bit data over a single differential pair (two wires) in flat-panel display applications In 800 x 480 resolution liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the DS90C241 serialiser and DS90C124 deserialiser achieve the same level of image quality with just two wires compared to previous generations of LVDS interfaces which required eight wires

The serdes chipset saves system cost by narrowing data paths that reduces PCB layers, cable width, connector size and pin count.
The DS90C241/124 chipset is well suited for applications such as automotive navigation and rear seat infotainment, in-flight entertainment systems, surveillance systems, remote display applications, CMOS/CCD imagers, point-of-sale (POS) terminals and automatic teller machines.
The chipset features AC coupling support, DC balance and pre-emphasis that will support up to 10m of cabling length.
"The automotive semiconductor content market, in particular, is undergoing double-digit growth".
"Navigation, safety and infotainment systems are driving the use of LCDs as a standard feature in most luxury passenger vehicles", said Dr Thomas Wirschem, Product Marketing Manager of the Interface Division at National Semiconductor in Europe.
"National developed the DS90C241 and DS90C124 to provide manufacturers with a lower interconnect count and longer-length cable in order to reduce the overall system cost".
The DS90C241 and DS90C124 chipset converts 24bit data over a single LVDS differential pair with embedded clock.
In addition to the low interconnect count, the chipset features AC coupling support of the LVDS differential pair and a pre-emphasis function that boosts signal strength for driving cable distances.
Proprietary data encoding enables a DC-balanced bit stream over the serial link.
Samples of the DS90C241 and DS90C124 are available now to select customers, with production quantities available in March 2006.
The products are priced at $6 in 1000-unit quantities and offered in a 48-pin, 7 x 7 x 1mm TQFP package.
