National Semiconductor is offering offered its popular DP83848 family of Phyter application-specific 10/100 physical layer Ethernet transceivers in new, very tiny 6 mm by 6 mm by 0.8 mm packages.

The family includes the only commercially available Ethernet transceiver in an extreme temperature range for use in harsh environments such as motor control, factory automation and security systems.

National's Phyter family of extreme, industrial and commercial-environment Ethernet transceivers are the first to address the expansive, unique needs of embedded-design engineers who are developing products that require network connectivity.

In addition, the DP83848 family enables engineers to migrate from legacy technologies such as RS-232, RS-485 and proprietary networks to 802.3 Ethernet.

The DP83848H extreme, DP83848T industrial and DP83848M commercial, in tiny LLP packaging enable flexible system partitioning in size-constrained applications, such as ultra-small motor drives and rotary encoders.

In addition, the transceivers allow using cost effective series capacitors rather than bulky node side transformers, further reducing board real estate and system cost.

The Phyter extreme DP83848H (-40 to 125C), and industrial DP83848T (-40 to 85C), transceivers address the quality and system reliability needs of developers implementing Ethernet in harsh environments.

In addition to an industrial temperature and extreme temperature range, the industry's highest electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of 4000V, and up to 137m of cable reach, both devices have IEEE 802.3 specification compliance guaranteed by test on every unit shipped.

These devices are well-suited for transportation, building automation and security applications.

The Phyter commercial DP83848M transceiver addresses the quality, reliability and cost requirements of embedded developers networking their devices for the home or high end peripherals.

The device offers an optimised feature set for these applications, including Auto-MDIX and assured performance thru IEEE 802.3u specification compliance, UNH interoperability certification, and up to 137 meters of cable reach.

Available for free download, this utility gives the user complete access for link, status, device configuration and network status monitoring, and has been developed to support current and future National Semiconductor products.

National Semiconductor's LVDS technology is a low-power, low-noise method for high-speed data transmission over copper interconnects.

LVDS solves current and future high-performance data transmission challenges in bandwidth-hungry applications by delivering data at gigabits per second at mW of power.

National is the world's largest supplier of high-speed LVDS products, according to Databean's 2005 Analog IC Market Share survey.

National's LVDS products include interface line drivers and receivers, LVDS-LVDS signal conditioners, LVDS-LVDS switching/multiplexing/repeating functions, LVDS serialiser/deserialisers, FPD link display solutions and ADCs with high-speed digital interfaces.

All three Ethernet transceivers are packaged in tiny lead-free 40-pin LLP packages and are available now.

In 1,000-unit quantities, the DP83848T is priced at $2.52 and the DP83848M is priced at $1.89.

In 100-unit quantities, the DP83848H is priced at $18.00 each.
