With the increasing use of speech recognition technologies to provide more convenient and hands-free means of accessing data and controlling devices, the demand for advanced signal processing algorithms that can improve recognition performance in noisy environments has increased dramatically.

NCT's porting of its powerful ClearSpeech voice recognition enhancer (VRE), technology to x86 library format represents an important stage in their efforts to make ClearSpeech readily available to the speech recognition market.

VRE has been developed to meet the demanding requirements of automotive, mobile and handheld device based speech recognition applications.

"Improved hit rates have been observed for both 'command and control' as well as continuous speech recognition systems", said Dr Gillian Davis, Managing Director of NCT.

"We have even managed to improve speech recognition performance in a convertible driving with the roof down on the motorway".

To further aid customer integration, these x86 VRE libraries have been made compatible with the ETSI Aurora distributed speech recognition (DSR) front end for mobile applications and have sampling of 8, 11 and 16kHz and a block size of 10ms.

For the convenience of customers interested in communications between humans as well as with machines, VRE has a mode of operation for human listening that can provide up to 18dB of noise reduction.

ClearSpeech is a suite of complex, highly refined software algorithms that provide noise cancellation for human listeners, noise cancellation for voice recognition, echo cancellation and signal conditioning.

By removing background noise and voice echo, ClearSpeech is able to vastly improve voice quality in a diverse range of communication systems.
