Shrinking power MOSFET switches

NEC's low-earth orbit L-Grade high-reliability devices include transistors and monolithic microwave ICs (MMICs) in both silicon and gallium arsenide (GaAs) technologies.
The first two devices are available now and use NEC's new UMOS-3 technology with its outstanding 0.35-micron design rule.
The uPA2450 and uPA2451 have maximum ratings of 20 and 30V, respectively, and both can be driven directly from a 2.5V power source.
With maximum drain current just over 8A and on-state resistance as low as 17.5ohm, both devices are capable of switching considerable loads.
Applications include DC/DC convertors and power management tasks in portable equipment such as protection circuits for lithium-ion batteries.
Both devices are 6-pin VSON packages, each contains two mosfet circuits and has diode ESD protection.
The backside fin of the package is used as a common drain and this technique lowers the wiring resistance and simplifies the layout task.
NEC recognises that designers are under increasing pressure to get products smaller and increase overall power density.
The company expects the new VSON packaged devices to give the electrical performance designers demand whilst meeting these important criteria.
