NEC has awarded Sussex-based design house Application Solutions (ASL) with its NEC Design Excellence Award in recognition of the design of its Emma2 set-top-box chip development platform.

NEC has awarded Sussex-based design house Application Solutions (ASL) with its NEC Design Excellence Award in recognition of the design of its Emma2 set-top-box chip development platform Emma2 is the flagship product in NEC's line-up of set-top box silicon and has been incorporated in digital TV offerings for several PayTV broadcasters

Unlike many electronics companies NEC does not make routine annual awards to partners, preferring to recognise individual suppliers on special merit.

At an award ceremony on Friday 10th May at NEC's worldwide multimedia application centre (MMAC) in Milton Keynes, Rob Green, NEC's VP said, "NEC demands a lot of its suppliers and it is nice to be able to recognise those who excel.

The Emma project is an important part of our worldwide digital TV activities and it is vital that we can rely on the support and design excellence of partners like Application Solutions to ensure our business success".

Sousan Azimrayat, ASL Managing Director said, "It is a real boost for the team when our efforts are recognised in this way.

Client satisfaction is the quickest way to develop any business and NEC's award confirms that, in its 14th year, ASL is sticking to its core objectives of design excellence and customer satisfaction".

Emma2 is the second generation in a chip architecture developed by NEC to drive feature-rich set-top-box designs.

With options running to over 200 million instructions per second, the device is fabricated using 0.13um process technology.

In addition to providing fast and flexible multi-stream A/V decoding, together with compelling graphics capabilities, NEC's developments include personal video recorder functions using a hard disc as temporary storage.

At the other end of the spectrum, the architecture has been used to implement low cost, entry level decoders for free-to-air services.

Application Solutions has been involved with the design of NEC's multimedia development platforms since 1997.

This latest award relates to hardware which facilitated the test and development of the Emma2 device itself and its subsequent integration to end-user set top box designs via reference designs and an application development platform.

During its relationship with NEC, ASL has designed over 50 boards and subassemblies together with associated software, it has always worked closely with NEC to ensure that technical, commercial and marketing objectives are met.
