The ISO and IEC have jump-started a new standard for real time locating systems based on chirp spread spectrum technology.

The International Organisation for Standardisation and the International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) have jump-started a new standard for real time locating systems (RTLS) based on chirp spread spectrum (CSS) technology Nanotron Technologies has led global CSS standardisation and developed solutions which offer CSS' benefits: accurate location, reliable two-way data communication and low power consumption

Together these benefits enable 2D/3D RTLS.

The new standard builds on the IEEE802.15.4a CSS physical layer (PHY) standard.

The ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 31 New Work Item Proposal 24730-3 passed with support from 20 countries' national bodies (only five are required).

To accelerate development, a proposed draft standard was also approved with support from eighteen countries.

The group will meet in Berlin in June 2007 to resolve the ballot comments and edit the new draft standard.

Nanotron's CEO Dr Jens Albers says: "The new application standard is a further milestone on our roadmap to satisfy the market demand for suitable RTLS solutions".

"Key customers and partners worldwide are working on chirp-based products".

"A standard-compliant solution will help increase our logistics market share for tracking valuable assets and people".

"We are very pleased that CSS is gaining momentum", John Lampe, Nanotron's VP Business Development and Project Editor of the new standard, adds.

"This is the second international CSS standard, and we expect more application-level standards to also build on the IEEE802.15.4a PHY and MAC foundation".

"I am excited by the broad-based international voting support which confirms the market demand for better solutions".

The first CSS solutions based on the new standards are being launched by Nanotron Technologies.

These products, based on nanoLOC, offer both robust communication with minimal power consumption and "location awareness" - precise localisation based on Nanotron's SDS-TWR technology.

Nanotron is committed to open industry standards, and offers total solutions encompassing chips, RF modules, networking software, development tools and custom project support.
