New Forest Electronics has upgraded its model SDA-02 handheld serial data analyser to handle the Modbus over serial line protocol.

New Forest Electronics has upgraded its model SDA-02 handheld serial data analyser to handle the Modbus over serial line protocol The new Modbus over serial line feature helps the user in three main ways

It displays and analyses monitored Modbus messages in an easily viewed way, with automatic validation of CRC/LRC, and instant display of RTU timing errors.

It allows the user to conveniently define and transmit test messages in Modbus format, without having to calculate CRC/LRC values.

And it can download captured data to a PC, so it appears in Modbus format.

It works with either "ASCII" or "RTU" (binary) transmission mode framing.

This upgrade is designed mainly to help find "low level" Modbus problems, ie those involving Modbus message framing and timing as specified by the Modbus over serial line specification.

It does not separate and identify fields within the Modbus application protocol being transported by the Modbus frame, as done by many PC based analysers.

It does show the application message, but the separate fields have to be identified by inspection by the user.

Thus in diagnosing systems, the SDA's strength lies in being able to identify these "low level" problems.

One these have been rectified if required, a PC based analyser may be used if necessary to identify and debug any remaining application protocol issues.

The facility is provided on all new SDA-02 analysers from New Forest Electronics, and is available as a firmware upgrade to those sold since May 2005.
