The programme for the 2006 Medical Device Technology European Conference will focus on the critical areas of medical device regulation, micro and nanotechnology and risk management.

The programme for the 2006 Medical Device Technology European Conference (UK NEC, Birmingham, 15th and 16the February) has just been unveiled It will focus on the critical areas of medical device regulation, micro and nanotechnology and risk management

Industry experts and major names include Julie Deacon, Assistant Director of the UK Micro and Nanotechnology Network, Dr Leonard Fass of GE Healthcare plus David Farrar of Smith and Nephew.

The UK Government has pledged to invest GBP 90 million to help industry harness the commercial opportunities offered by micro- and nanotechnology, and the conference will explore how the pan-European medical device and in vitro diagnostics industries can do just that.

The programme will explore the latest uses and future opportunities of this technology in medical devices, including a presentation on sensor systems based on advanced micro- and nanotechnologies by Dr Manfred Frischholz of Campus Micro Technologies and an in-depth look at the new generation of diagnostic and analytical products for point-of-care testing based on microsystems technology given by Dr Peter Laitenberger of Sphere Medical.

The conference provides a pan-European perspective.

For instance, Alain Prat from the French agency for healthcare products will give the latest update from the Market Surveillance Operations Group; Michael Cox of the Danish Medicines Agency will provide an update on the progress of the forthcoming European regulatory regime for human tissue engineered products; Miroslav Palat of Johnson and Johnson will address the issues and solutions to working in and dealing with organisations in the new EU Member States, while focusing on EU and FDA expectations, Bert Degens of Degens Quality Solutions will highlight the trends and challenges in risk management.

The specialist risk management workshop proved very popular when it was introduced in the 2005 conference and it is to be repeated in the 2006 programme.

Delegates attending this practical and interactive workshop will receive a detailed understanding of risk analysis techniques for compliance with EN ISO14971.

Running alongside the conference is the MDT Collaboration Forum, a networking event for professionals involved in the design and manufacture of medical device and IVD products.

Themed "Where problems meet solutions", the premise of this forum is to find solutions to device design and manufacturing problems, make products more effective using the latest materials and technology and build the right partnerships.

Delegates can set their own agenda for the forum via the website, choosing to attend a mix of expert briefings, plenary sessions, roundtable discussions and pre-arranged one-on-one meetings.

Contributions to the forum come from senior clinicians, specialists in bioseciences, as well as industry experts.

Complementing the conference is the Medical Device Technology Exhibition where over 170 organisations will showcase innovative components, products and services used in the manufacture of medical devices and IVD products.

Innovation is a key theme of the 2006 event which will feature a series of free to attend sessions from innovators and market experts.

This innovation and presentation centre includes Richard Boyle of NASA who talks about the latest advances and innovations in space technology that can be applied to medical products as well as Rajesh Aggarwal of Imperial College London who will explore how the intelligent surgeons of the future may well be robotic.
