More power from laser modules for WDM systems
Oki Electric has developed a trio of high-power 1480nm pump laser diode modules for WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) optical transmission.
We are highly committed to leading in the electronics industry in the protection of the environment, as part of our core management policy", said Masayoshi Ino, Executive Vice President at Oki Electric, responsible for all of the Oki group's environmental protection strategies.
Oki has been developing its environmental protection programs since 1993, giving high priority to environmental activities in its corporate management policies throughout all of its group companies.
On this occasion, Oki has achieved its goal to obtain ISO14001 certification in all six of its production and R and D facilities at Oki Electric and in all 16 facilities of the Oki group companies in Japan, in accordance with its overall environmental programme.

Production-programmed ROMs boost development time
Oki Electric has unveiled two 128Mbit P2ROM (production-programmed ROM) products: the MR27V12800J and the MR27T12800J.
In 1996, Oki established the goal of obtaining ISO14001 certification by the end of March 1999 for all production facilities that affect the environment.
In 1999, Oki added another goal: certification of the rest of its production and R and D bases by the end of March 2002.
To obtain and maintain the ISO14001 certification, it is indispensable to ensure that all employees observe environmental laws and conduct continuous environmental-protection activities, and to implement environmental education.
Oki has posted environmental information on each company's intranet, providing information on the latest environmental laws, targets and achievements of each facility, and additional related information to all employees through e-learning.
Among the initiatives implemented by the group, semiconductor plants, which consume large amounts of energy, have introduced cogeneration systems.
The introduction of these systems could increase the efficiency of energy usage from approximately 35% to more than 50%, and reduce by 3.1% the amount of discharged carbon dioxide.
The design and development divisions have established a "harmful-substances management and aggregation system", in order to reduce these substances in products.
The system is integrated into in-house networks and incorporated in design tools, enabling engineers to select environmentally sensitive materials in product design.
In offices, the reduction of paper consumption was implemented by introducing an "electronic document management system" in each facility.
The Oki group succeeded in reducing by 68% the amount of paper in its Tokyo-area facilities in 2001, relative to 1997 amounts.
"At the Oki group, we intend to further promote our environmental activities, aiming to obtain ISO14001 certification for non-production facilities, including those dealing with sales, software development, logistics, and service and support", said Ino.
