Oki Electric has developed a trio of high-power 1480nm pump laser diode modules for WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) optical transmission.
"We have been positioning the environmental protection activities as an integral part of our management policy.
Improving transportation of products directly effects the reduction of carbon dioxide, a cause of global warming.
Oki will continue its logistics reform", said Masayoshi Ino, Executive Vice President at Oki Electric, responsible for all of the Oki group's environmental protection strategies.
Oki has a semiconductor logistics centre in Hachioji-city, Tokyo, where it previously gathered, classified and packed all the chips produced by its manufacturing plants worldwide, and then sent them to domestic customers and overseas subsidiaries.
Overseas group companies then sent these chips to each of their customers.
This meant that all semiconductor products manufactured at Oki (Thailand), one of Oki's major overseas semiconductor plants, were gathered in Hachioji; even if they were for overseas customers.
As production from the Thai plant has increased, it has become increasingly critical to reduce shipping time and costs.
Oki has established a new logistics site in Oki (Thailand), and has introduced the customer direct shipment system, capable of sending chips to worldwide customers directly from the Thai plant.
This reduces time and distance of air transportation, which results in a significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and lead-time of logistics.
Oki has also transferred its Japanese logistics centre from Hachioji-city to Baraki-city, which is closer to Narita airport.
This has made the customs process less time consuming and reduced the track-transportation required to and from Hachioji.
With these measures, Oki expects to eliminate 11 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year, and reduce annual Japanese logistics costs by Y3 million.
