ZFalcon is a novel type of mechanical multichannel optical switch incorporating the Oki Group's micro-optics technology While providing multiple channels, ZFalcon offers compact dimensions, low insertion loss, low power consumption and high repeatability

These features simplify the ZFalcon system architecture, enabling users to create highly flexible optical networks with user-friendly line switching and complex optical fibre route selection.

The company will exhibit ZFalcon at the Optical Fiber Conference next week in Los Angeles.

"Oki Electric Cable is leveraging technology innovations to give our customers the power to create more flexible optical networks", said Yasuo Sakaki, President and CEO of Oki Electric Cable.

"The success of ZFalcon development is the fruit of our cumulative knowhow and advanced micro-optical technologies".

Demand for multichannel optical switches is growing, due to their capacity to permit smooth redirection of optical fibre routing in accordance with changes in data traffic or network problems and to increase the efficiency of data transmission over optical broadband networks.

By applying micro-optics technology, Oki Electric Cable has succeeded in developing the ZFalcon multichannel optical switch, which offers a simple configuration using general-purpose processing and control technologies, for its optical switch driving device.

ZFalcon allows customers to construct much higher cost/performance and flexible optical networks than with existing optical switches based on planar lightwave circuits and micromachine technologies.

Enabling the construction of cost-saving and flexible optical networks, the ZFalcon optical switch has the following unique characteristics: insertion loss of less than 2dB, removing the need for an optical amplifier; a latching-type switch for low operating power drain; and no need for a complex control system - the switch can be installed in 1U size units in general-purpose 19in racks.

Oki Electric Cable plans to introduce 4 x 4 and 8 x 8 optical switches to the world market.

Samples of the new products will be available from April 2004, and commercial production will begin in October 2004.

The company also intends to accelerate the development of much smaller optical switches with high numbers of channels for use in various networks.
