Open Plug will provide its Embedded Linux Plug-in System (ELIPS) component-based cellular handset software framework to Commit, to support rapid customisation of 3G chipsets for the Chinese market.

The agreement between the two organisations allows Commit to cost-effectively offer ELIPS to its customers, allowing them to work with a large number of application developers to provide a wide range of 3G applications.

"ELIPS gives Commit the flexibility to meet the unprecedented diversity of applications implicit in such a large and rapidly growing market," said Eric Baissus, CEO of Open Plug.

"This is an extremely exciting development for the Asian cellular market, and I am delighted that ELIPS is at the epicentre." Andy Yang, Marketing Director of Commit added, "We are targeting a market of over 1.3 billion people, with technology so powerful that we are yet to realise its full potential.

ELIPS provides flexibility and rapid responses allowing us to address the needs of the Chinese 3G market, both essential to success in the immediate and longer term." ELIPS is a small embedded engine that runs on the handset with negligible memory foot print and resource overhead.

It sits above the handset's RTOS and allows adding and customising of handset applications and user interface quickly, drawing from the many Linux compatible applications available in the market.

Handsets running ELIPS can also be upgraded in the field, to support ongoing differentiation and revenue growth.

ELIPS' component-based technology allows selected software features to be assembled quickly, reducing roll-out costs and time to market for new services.

And because ELIPS is Linux-based, handset vendors can easily find independent partners as well as maximising re-use between projects to achieve the most competitive prices.

ELIPS allows developers, including Chinese developers targeting their home market, to quickly port their applications to handsets built on the Commit platform.

The full ELIPS solution includes the Software Development Kit, Integration Management System, Run Time System and Update and Deployment System necessary to enable developers to fully integrate components built using their preferred tools, or imported from a library.

LINUX components are principally developed, generated and simulated on the PC based ELIPS SDK (Software Development Kit), and then transferred and integrated automatically with a few clicks onto the ELIPS RTS (Run Time System ), where they are dynamically executed, and finally, deployed or updated on demand via ELIPS UDS (Update and Deployment System).

ELIPS provides a very fast integration path and full cross platform compatibility, enabling up to 80% shorter time to market for new services and applications.

The ability to quickly develop and customise the user interface is one of the most important aspects of designing a mobile platform.

It allows device manufacturers to tailor designs for diverse target markets, and allows carriers to build brand loyalty by offering exclusivity through the look and feel of phones connected to their own networks.
