Open-Plug is working with Digital Airways to add the Kaleido man-machine interface (MMI) solution as a pre-integrated component in Open-Plug's Elips software framework for mass-market mobile phones.

The addition of the Kaleido suite of MMI tools to Elips allows mobile phone makers to quickly develop new terminal MMI solutions using best in class components, even after the terminal has been shipped.

According to Eric Baissus, CEO of Open-Plug: "The wireless terminal market is getting more and more complex, with operators and handset makers creating a differentiated offering by integrating a growing number of applications and services onto their wireless devices".

"A well-designed MMI is crucial for brand owners to create and maintain their specific look and feel - as well as to enable users to fully access the services and applications available to them".

"In partnership, Digital Airways and Open Plug directly address this challenge, offering rapid cost, optimised integration of the Kaleido based MMI solutions to give a hardware independent user interface".

Kaleido is a complete solution for mobile phone manufacturers and operators to create sophisticated man-machine interfaces quickly and easily.

Kaleido offers flexibility and complete ease in defining, implementing and updating a phone's user interface, including over-the-air (OTA), without programming.

It is unique in the way that it separates the MMI specification from its implementation.

The MMI is fully specified with a configurable file, which is read and duly rendered by the MMI engine implemented on the handset.

As a result, manufacturers dramatically reduce the cost and time-to-market of MMI design and implementation, while gaining complete flexibility to produce customised phones.

Open-Plug has developed a new generation of software framework, called Elips.

Elips is the first component-based software framework targeting mass-market mobile phones.

Elips sits above the RTOS of a mobile handset and offers Digital Airways a hardware independent integration.

A small embedded engine running on the mobile phone, the Elips Run Time System, delivers the flexibility of component-based technology with no resource and power consumption penalty, which is of major importance in the mobile market place.
