New from ON Semiconductor is the uESD (micro ESD) dual series of high-performance, micro-packaged electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection diodes.

The uESD dual series is designed to protect voltage-sensitive components for two lines in applications that demand minimal board space and low profiles, such as cellphones, MP3 players and portable gaming systems.

"For designers dedicated to meeting strict ESD compliance standards, ON Semiconductor's uESD dual devices offer a compelling alternative to commonly used multilayer varistors", said Gary Straker, ON Semiconductor Director of Marketing for the Small Signal Division.

"The uESD dual device can protect two lines in less board space than two 0402 MLVs, while offering numerous performance advantages by delivering lower clamping voltage, lower leakage, faster response time and ability to withstand multiple ESD strikes without undesirable shifts in electrical characteristics".

These devices have been designed to maximise ESD suppression performance in the smallest 3-leaded plastic package on the market today.

The uESD dual series clamps 30kV ESD transients - per the IEC61000-4-2 standard - in less than 1ns to ensure voltage-sensitive components are protected.

These devices clamp ESD pulses to less than 7V to protect the most sensitive systems and minimise disruption in a circuit's functionality.

The uESD dual series features the ultrasmall SOT-723 package.

Boasting a 1.2 x 1.2mm outline makes it the ideal fit for designers that are limited in board space.

The 0.5mm profile of this package also enables designers to minimise the height of their designs without sacrificing functionality.

The two-line protection that this series integrates into one package further reduces required board space and system component count, thus simplifying the assembly process.

These new ESD protection devices also improve circuit efficiency and battery life with an ultralow leakage of 0.05uA in their off state making them ideal for handheld applications.

Their low capacitance of 35pF makes them suitable for protecting data lines with datarates up to 10Mbit/s.

"As portable electronic applications increase in the number of user interfaces and shrink in size, they become more susceptible to accidental ESD damage", said Mamoon Rashid, ON Semiconductor General Manager for the Small Signal Division.

"The uESD dual series is the latest addition to ON Semiconductor's growing portfolio of devices specifically designed to clamp ESD transients".

"Through leading-edge silicon design and a commitment to push the envelope on packaging, ON Semiconductor will continue to develop high-performance solutions for this challenging applications space".

The uESD3.3D and uESD5.0D are available in SOT-723 packages and priced at $0.070 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities.
