High-voltage optoisolators handle speedy data

An Optek Technology product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Nov 6, 2007

Optoisolators are ideal for a variety of applications that require high-speed data transmission or high voltage signal isolation.

Optek Technology has expanded its high voltage optoisolator product family to include a device capable of 500Kbit/s datarates.

The OPI1268 Series optoisolators are based on the company's Photologic phototransistor technology, with temperature, voltage and current compensation to ensure a stable digital output signal.

The OPI1268 Series high voltage optoisolators consist of a high-efficiency 850nm GaAlAs LED optically coupled to an integrated circuit that combines a photodiode that detects the incoming modulated light and converts it to a proportionate current.

The current is then fed into a linear amplifier that is temperature, current and voltage compensated, resulting in a highly stable digital output signal with an open collector inverter configuration.

According to Alan Bennett, Optek's Vice-President of Sales and Marketing: "The design of the OPI1268 Series provides AC and DC voltage isolation up to 16kV between the input and output circuitry, while maintaining TTL signal integrity".

The OPI1268 Series optoisolators are ideal for a variety of applications that require high-speed data transmission or high voltage signal isolation.

Other applications include high voltage isolation for PCB power systems, office machines, industrial equipment and medical equipment.

The OPI1268 Series optoisolators' input diode features a typical forward voltage of 1.3V at 20mA, with a reverse current of 100uA.

Maximum propagation delay from low to high output level for the coupled device is 100ns, and 200ns from high to low, with an LED positive going threshold current of 0.9 to 10.0mA.

Typical pricing is approximately US $4.89 in quantities of 1000.
