An OSA Technologies product story

OSA's Intelligent Platform Management Interface version 2.0 (IPMI v2.0) firmware and software building blocks are now used in Supermicro server products.

OSA's Intelligent Platform Management Interface version 2.0 (IPMI v2.0) firmware and software building blocks are now used in Supermicro server products.

Scheduled to ship shortly, these products represent the industry's first implementation of the new IPMI v2.0 specification.

Supermicro will offer IPMI v2.0 support as a pre-integrated feature of its server motherboards.

This will allow for remote monitoring, management and recovery capabilities, regardless of the status or health of the server.

New features such as enhanced security using leading authentication and encryption mechanisms in combination with remote console viewing will help reduce operational risk by securing remote operations.

Moreover, with IPMI being implemented at the silicon level, it deals with monitoring basic server parts such as power supplies, fans, voltage and temperature irrespective of the type or health of the CPU or operating system.

This technology helps IT users manage servers from various vendors in disparate locations, reducing their total cost of ownership (TCO).

"Supermicro has always been a technology leader in engineering high quality, leading-edge server solutions to the global white box markets", said Charles Liang, President and CEO of Supermicro.

"We were the first to ship IPMI-compliant Xeon servers since 2001, and with this relationship with OSA, we are eager again to be the first manufacturer to ship this new version of the IPMI standard".

"Using IPMI v2.0, OSA today gives Supermicro the ability to provide their customers remote management, monitoring, diagnostics and recovery capabilities at every phase of a system's lifecycle", said Mark Lee, CEO and President of OSA Technologies.

"By adopting OSA's IPMI v2.0 building blocks during design time, Supermicro was able to add critical management features, while retaining the need to differentiate their products using our advanced development kit".

IPMI offers many benefits.

For server vendors, it provides a rapid and cost effective way to integrate IPMI-based monitoring, management, diagnosis and recovery features while still allowing for platform differentiation.

For IT users, it offers ways to increase their return-on-investment (ROI) and reduce TCO by giving them a pre-integrated secure, centralised method to manage a server's complete health.
