The OSE real-time operating system has been chosen by BAE Systems to enhance its Multi-Role System (MRS) battlefield communication systems.

The OSE real-time operating system has been chosen by BAE Systems to enhance its Multi-Role System (MRS) battlefield communication systems.

The MRS family has been supplied to a number of countries as the basis of their national or area communications systems capabilities.

BAE Systems' Tony Keane, software manager said, "For modern battlefield communications, the MRS system needs to provide very high data performance in terms of its availability, bandwidth and functionality.

OSE's robustness, its networking capabilities and its toolset are very important to this development".

The project is based on an OSE for PowerPC solution.

BAE Systems is also benefiting from using OSE's Illuminator system level debugging tools and OSE's Soft Kernel simulation environment.

OSE's message-based architecture achieves powerful simplicity, instantly and seamlessly in complex, distributed systems.

OSE offers a powerful tool chain that consists of industry-standard compilers and debuggers, powerful host-target tools, and accurate simulators, all supported by a comprehensive integrated development and debugging environment.

"The OSE Soft Kernel Environment means that we are able to simulate and refine the performance of multiple systems ahead of hardware availability.

This plays a key role in maximising development time.

In both the "soft" and The "real" environment, the Illuminator tools do a great job of showing us exactly what is going on.

It has some very powerful features that mean we spend more time developing and less time debugging.

We are very pleased with the OSE product and support", Keane concluded.

Richard Blackburn, OSE Systems' UK manager said: "Without a doubt, this is very much a "high end" development, demanding a lot from the OSE RTOS, our network protocol and our tools.

This is a great example of what OSE can deliver".
