OSE Systems has integrated its real-time operating system with IBM's embedded Java technology to create a development and deployment solution for next-generation mobile handsets and infrastructure.
As part of a nonexclusive agreement, OSE will license and sell IBM's WebSphere Micro Environment and WebSphere Studio Device Developer (previously known as VisualAge Micro Edition).
"Customers are demanding Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) in their next generation mobile phones as well as wireless infrastructure", said Jonathan Prial, vice president, marketing, Pervasive Computing, IBM "Combining IBM's WebSphere infrastructure for small devices with a proven, highly reliable RTOS makes a compelling platform for the world's largest manufacturers of wireless technology".
"OSE provides a unique foundation for wireless infrastructure and devices such as 3G handsets with Internet access using high-speed packet-based data transmission technology that require operating systems with extraordinary performance, reliability and flexibility", said Eva Skoglund, product manager of OSE Systems.
"Created specifically for the communications industry, OSE addresses application and system requirements where robustness is critical to avoiding system failures".
WebSphere Micro Environment is IBM's new e-business platform for small devices.
It provides a pretested, production level "Java Powered" runtime environment for wireless e-business applications.
At its core is a production-level J2ME runtime environment that is pre-tested and compatible with the following J2ME specifications: Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC); Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP); Connected Device Configuration (CDC); and Foundation Profile.
WebSphere Studio Device Developer is an integrated development environment for the creation of wireless applications.
Its award-winning tools enable developers to test wireless applications, as the application runs "live" on the wireless device.
OSE's message-based architecture achieves powerful simplicity, instantly and seamlessly in complex, distributed systems.
It offers a reliable process management and dynamic runtime configuration enabling faster and more bulletproof system deployment and maintenance.
OSE's structured, multilevel facility for error detection enables cleaner code and more reliable and consistent exception handling in the system.
OSE also includes built-in monitoring of critical processes so that problems are known before a software failure brings down the entire system.
