Super-bright LED keeps its cool

An Osram Opto Semiconductors product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Nov 22, 2007

The exceptionally low thermal resistance of the Diamond Dragon's SMT package allows heat produced in the chip to be efficiently removed from the LED.

Available in January 2008 from Osram Opto Semiconductors, the Diamond Dragon is a super-bright LED that achieves brightness of up to 250 lumen, and will be available in whites ranging from 2700K through 6500K as well as all monochromatic colours.

With this latest advance in technology, Osram will offer an LED that is ideal for indoor and outdoor general lighting, automotive forward and signal lighting and other high-performance applications.

The exceptionally low thermal resistance of 2.5K/W provided by the Diamond Dragon's SMT package allows heat produced in the chip to be efficiently removed from the LED package.

The maximum junction temperature of 175C makes these LEDs extremely robust and enables applications where the LED cannot be easily cooled.

The combination of low thermal resistance and high junction temperature capability allows Diamond Dragon LEDs to be easily integrated in small spotlights such as MR-16's bulb retrofits and recessed downlights.

Diamond Dragon LEDs can withstand high drive currents without damage.

Typical (binning) current is 1.4A, with a maximum current of 2.0A.

50kh is the typical expected lifetime.

This robust package incorporates a silicone lens and is fully SMT compliant.

The Diamond Dragon footprint is compatible with previous devices allowing upgradeability for current Golden and Platinum Dragon users.

"Osram Opto Semiconductors is very excited to bring the new high brightness Diamond Dragon to market", says Ellen Sizemore, Director, LED/IR Marketing, Osram Opto Semiconductors.

"This is truly a breakthrough product that will enable LEDs to be used in a myriad of applications where heat and thermal management issues were once barriers to the adoption of this technology".

"The general illumination market has been asking for a product like this and we are pleased to be able to deliver what the market has been waiting for".

This high-brightness single-chip device uses Osram's ThinGaN chip technology along with chip level conversion.

The new Diamond Dragon is rated for 5-8W input power and enhances Osram's already large power LED portfolio which includes 1-3W LEDs (Golden and Platinum Dragon) as well as the 10W and up line of Ostar devices.
