Ruggedised board begins the EPIC story
The XE-800 is the first available SBC on the new EPIC (Embedded Platform for Industrial Computing) form factor.
The XE-800 is the first available SBC on the new EPIC (Embedded Platform for Industrial Computing) form factor, a recently approved specification from a consortium of major US companies.
EPIC's size is midway between the PC/104 and the EBX formats, making it the first such standard to be openly available to designers and manufacturers.
According to Eric Gulliksen, Market Analyst at Venture Development Corp: "The publication of the EPIC form factor specification and the support commitment by five market leaders brings relief to system manufacturers who need consistency and standardisation in a mid-sized SBC.
EPIC could be the biggest development in the industry since the PC/104 Consortium was founded 12 years ago".
The ruggedised XE-800 operates over a -40 to +75C temperature range and is intended for embedded military, security, industrial and mobile applications.
The XE-800 is a low-cost, low-power SBC with Pentium performance.
It features four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 1.1 ports for legacy devices, two RS232/422/485 serial ports, 48 lines of digital I/O, 10/100Base-T Ethernet, CRT and flat panel video, PC/104 and PC/104-Plus expansion, CompactFlash socket for bootable and removable memory to 2Gbyte.
The companion XE-800 OS Embedder kits, are available for Linux 2.6, and QNX.
These kits are a combination of hardware and software for "instant on" operation of the XE-800.
The single piece price is $595, with volume discounts.
