Fibre-optic transceiver allows RJ-45
port density

The Optek Technologies OPF 5020 fibre-optic transceiver from Pacer Components is based on the new industry-standard MT-RJ.

The Optek Technologies OPF 5020 fibre-optic transceiver from Pacer Components is based on the new industry-standard MT-RJ Its small size allows the same port density as copper-based RJ-45 modular jacks. The OPF 5020 combines a high-speed 850nm gallium aluminium arsenide LED with a high speed photodiode and amplifier in a single package

The high coupling efficiency of the LED and optical system allows the device to be used at low current drive levels hence reducing power consumption and offering high system reliability.

The photodiode is coupled to a low-noise transimpedance amplifier and the output is a low impedance analogue source.

The analogue output is externally converted to ECL/TTL levels for use in digital modes up to 125Mbaud, NRZ.

This device provides the means to construct a low-cost, space-saving Ethernet (10 BASE-FL) or fast Ethernet (100 BASE-SX) fibre-optic link when used with commercially available LED driver and postamp/data-quantiser circuits and can be used typically for communication between nodes of an FDDI network.

Separate isolated circuits perform the electrical to optical and optical to electrical conversions within the package and electromagnetic decoupling of the transmitter and a receiver element is provided by an internal shielding arrangement.

An application note for interfacing the OPF 5020 is also available. Request a free brochure from Pacer International ...
