Sensor seeks out true colours

Pacer Components has the industry's first integrated low-cost RGB colour sensor with a digital compatible interface.

Pacer Components has the industry's first integrated low-cost RGB colour sensor with a digital compatible interface Manufactured by TAOS (Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions) the new device is packaged in an 8-pin SOTC surface mount package and allows designers to take a drop-in approach to their colour sensing capabilities

The sensor, based on a high-performance light to frequency convertor integrates red, green and blue (RGB) filters on a single die.

This allows 10 to 12bit or higher resolution per colour channel without the need for expensive ADCs.

The full RGB colour sensing is achieved through a 64-photodiode grid consisting of four types of photodiode - red, green, blue and clear for overall intensity information.

The device is capable of responding to light over a 250,000:1 dynamic range with a typical output frequency range of 2Hz to 500kHz.

To aid evaluation of the product, Pacer offers an evaluation module consisting of a lens module with white LED illuminator, a parallax board of education (BOE) module, a programmed Basic stamp and PC host software.

The Windows software displays the RGB output values from the TCS230 and allows the user to view the colour detected by the module in both RGB and HSV colour space.

This sensor is ideal for colorimeter applications such as colour printers, medical diagnostics and colour matching with paints, textiles, cosmetics and printed materials. Request a free brochure from Pacer International ...
