We fully support Rupert in this move - it is reassuring to see Rupert's confidence in our investment and we wish him success in his new role".
Dr Rodger Sykes, President and CEO of picoChip added: "Having reviewed picoChip as an investment opportunity in his previous role Rupert was convinced that we had an outstanding concept at the time it's most needed.
It is great to have someone with this level of industry knowledge and confidence in the company join the team".
Rupert Baines has spent 15 years in technology marketing, working on commercialising many leading edge technologies.
He spent six years with Analog Devices in Boston, working on semiconductors for GSM and wireless infrastructure before managing its broadband product line and holding responsibility for the industry-standard ADSL chipset.
He has also worked for operators, most recently as Director of Product Development and Strategy for Atlantic Telecom, where he ran a large pan-European DSL rollout and trialled wireless broadband deployments.
picoChip's technology allows flexible, low-cost development of 3G basestations.
Mobile operators can cost-effectively deploy and upgrade without having to replace obsolete hardware each time.
Continually evolving standards will require constant upgrades to these basestations over the coming decade in order to extend their performance.
picoChip's offering is attractive because it is faster to develop, cheaper and less power hungry than today's solutions.
Mobile operators are under intense competitive pressure to implement 3G infrastructures to capitalise on expensive license purchases, so maximising performance and minimising cost of deployment is a vital concern.
"3G equipment makers are crying out for more cost-effective baseband solutions and picoChip's offering will not only solve these problems but can be applied to a broad range of other applications too", concluded Sykes.
