Convergence specialist UbiquiSys has selected picoChip's PC202 processor and modem technology for its 3G HSDPA ZoneGate home access point system.

Convergence specialist UbiquiSys has selected picoChip's PC202 processor and modem technology for its 3G HSDPA ZoneGate home access point system UbiquiSys CTO Will Franks said: "The integration of the PC202 is very impressive and delivers dramatically better performance-per-dollar than conventional digital signal processors"

"This clearly helps us meet the challenging price targets for consumer equipment".

"Because picoChip supply complete modem software, that reduced our development risk, accelerated our time to market and, most significantly, enabled us to concentrate on developing the range of sophisticated, innovative functionality that is the core of our home access point system".

A major priority for mobile operators is improving indoor coverage and capacity of 3G to enable new service opportunities in the home and SOHO markets.

The UbiquiSys ZoneGate system employs a small plug-and-play device that relies on a user's broadband connection to pass both signalling and call traffic between the locally connected mobile phone and the operator's network.

ZoneGate will incorporate picoChip's PC8208 software-defined modem to support high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) with an upgrade path to high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA).

picoChip CTO Doug Pulley said: "UbiquiSys have demonstrated a very advanced architecture, looking forward to an all-IP network".

"The software they have developed integrates W-CDMA with broadband and offers a very elegant approach to deploying high volumes of home access points".

"We developed the PC202 as a upgradeable device, and it is impressive to see how much functionality Ubiquisys have added to our modem".

In a single device, the PC202 integrates high-performance DSP functionality, specialised accelerators and an ARM processor.

The powerful multicore DSP runs picoChip's PC8208 HSDPA modem reference design, while the ARM runs the sophisticated control code and application stacks developed by UbiquiSys.

The software-based architecture also ensures a flexible platform for future enhancements.
