SMT Magazine has recognised the CE Analytics/Practical Components lead-free process capability validation programme as the winner of its 2004 Vision Award for outstanding technology and innovation in the electronic testing category This award was presented on 22nd February at the APEX show in Anaheim, California

Practical Components and Cookson Electronics understood the rapidly emerging need to assist electronic assembly companies in meeting the challenging move to lead-free processing, driven by the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC requiring no more than 0.1% lead in solder joints.

Practical with its experience in dummy components and test boards and CE drawing on its extensive analytical expertise, developed and launched its CE Analytics lead-free process capability validation programme in 2004.

This comprehensive programme consists of two key elements: a test kit containing Cookson Electronics' laminates, pad finishes, stencils, lead-free solder paste and cored wire combined with boards, lead-free components and set up software from Practical Components.

The second element is a comprehensive lead-free process capability report based on CE Analytics' expert analytical evaluation and process capability validation services conducted on finished assemblies tested to IPC and J-STD requirements.

"We spoke with customers who were concerned about the time and cost associated with successfully transitioning to lead-free", said Tom Hunsinger, Cookson Electronics' Product Manager.

"Their main concerns were reliably validating their lead-free process, and having a single source that offered all of the required materials and analytical services".

"They wanted to make one call to get the complete package".

After test boards are built by an electronics assembler, they are sent to CE Analytics where the lead-free process capability assessment services are conducted by Cookson's skilled laboratory technicians.

The output is a comprehensive laboratory analysis report and recommendation for process optimisation, if applicable.

Companies whose assemblies meet IPC and J-STD requirements will receive a process capability validation certificate so they can operate their lead-free process with confidence.
