Precious metals reclamation specialist Phoenix County Metals has achieved accreditation to ISO14001 at the first attempt.

Precious metals reclamation specialist Phoenix County Metals has achieved accreditation to ISO14001 with the British Standards Institute (BSI) at the first attempt PCM reclaims precious metals from a variety of sources, including plating solutions, plated scrap, ion exchange resins and any type of electronic components, such as circuit boards, pins, plugs and edge connectors

These materials arise from the electroplating, pharmaceutical, printed circuit board and other high-tech manufacturing industries.

The principle metals recovered are gold, silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium.

The company also offers specialised cleaning services which include shielding used in gold coating processes by the semiconductor industry, together with recycling/resale opportunities for all types of electronic equipment and electronic scrap.

Where material is of a sensitive nature it can also be destroyed and a certificate of destruction issued.

Managing Director, Paul Johnson explains: "ISO14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems".

"Achieving this standard demonstrates the company's commitment to the impact it has on the environment and it provides a rigorous framework for implementing further environmental initiatives".

"It also illustrates our ability to meet tough industry standards and our ethic to strive towards continual improvement".

To achieve the standard, companies must look at their business and determine how it impacts on the environment.

The most significant impacts are identified and a plan is then developed to ensure that they are effectively managed.

Changes implemented at PCM include totally eliminating the use of certain environmentally sensitive chemicals, careful segregation of waste and stepping up the environmental emergency response for oil and chemical spillages.

Johnson continues: "The staff at PCM have been really enthusiastic about achieving this standard".

"The benefit of the changes can readily be seen as they go about their day to day work and they know this will have a very positive impact on the environment".

"The task does not end here however, and we must continue to take significant strides forward in order to retain the accreditation".

This standard will be integrated into PCM's ongoing accreditation to ISO9001:2000 quality system and ensures that customers can have complete confidence in a professionally administered system.

Perhaps particularly noteworthy is that PCM is a small company employing just 12 staff which demonstrates that ISO standards are not just for the larger players.
