This new leading-edge baseband family is Class12 EGPRS-capable, meaning the Edge modulation is on top of the packet environment of GPRS.
Thanks to its unique level of system integration, this new product family can run advanced applications, including multimedia messaging services, MP3 and melody generation, directly on the baseband processor without the need for external circuitry.
It also enables baseband cellular handset manufacturers to develop enhanced mobile phone terminals with usable datarates up to 300Kbit/s.

"By supporting Edge, our new baseband family offers the real-time performance and processing capabilities necessary to enrich the experience of the end-user and support the advancement of next generation applications".
The first product from this new baseband family, the PCF5213, supports melody generation through an embedded FM synthesiser and offers Teletype (TTY) automatic voice to data translation - designed for people who are hard of hearing and essential for US mobile handsets.
Alongside location-based services that are supported by enhanced observed time difference (EOTD) and fulfil the E911 US-specific needs, the PCF5213 also offers high speed circuit switched data (HSCSD) necessary for fast, dedicated data transmissions.
It also provides extensive integrated mixed signal capability for interfacing to RF transceiver ICs and to acoustic devices and I/O.
Additionally, the baseband has an extensive peripheral set (USB, MMC, FCI, high-speed UART) for increased connectivity - a key factor for the industry as it moves towards convergence.
A state-of-the-art set of development tools for system debug and software development is available to accompany the baseband and, as an option, Philips can provide fully validated software components such as protocol stack and multimedia applications, shortening development time for handset manufacturers.
As part of its current and future chipset and system solution offering, Philips' new baseband family interfaces with the 3G Opus platform as well as the RF, power amplifiers and power management units from Philips and other industry standard compatible products.
Providing complete digital and analogue processing capabilities in a single package, the first samples of PCF5213 will be available in mid 2002.
Volume production is expected by mid 2003 in a 12 x 12 x 1.8mm 0.5-pitch 228-pin LFPBGA.
