A PCI Express bridge enables next generation PC-TV laptop designers to easily integrate any TV front-end with a PCI Express interface.

Philips has introduced a PCI Express bridge that enables next generation PC-TV laptop designers to easily integrate any TV front-end with a PCI Express interface With application versatility and flexible board design configuration, Philips' new SAA7160E chip supports four parallel digital streams which allow PC-TV viewers to simultaneously watch, record and preview TV images, which was previously only available with top-of-the-range LCD TVs

Philips SAA7160E PCI Express-based audio-video bridge provides ports for capturing video, program/transport and audio streams, including two I2S-bus inputs for up to four channels, for high-level audio functionality.

Together with the SAA7162E, which integrates two audio/video decoders with a PCI Express bridge, PC-TV technology designers now have the choice of either using a full Philips solution or using specific Philips reference designs to help build a system of third party technology to suit a specialised market need.

"With the Philips SAA7160E's unmatched ability to handle multiple channel inputs with mixed digital and analogue signals, Lite-On will be launching a series of products using this reference design", said Bill Wang, Senior Manager, Design Team Leader, Consumer Electronics Solutions BU, Lite-On Technology.

"The reusable Windows device driver library in the SAA7160 reduces duplication for Windows software, freeing time and resources to focus on expanding our product range".

"SAA7160 adds to our leading PCI Express video portfolio, bringing total flexibility to complement the high integration of SAA7162 dual channel AV decoder", said Martin Maloney, Marketing Director, PC Systems, Philips Semiconductors.

"SAA7160 can be matched with multiple combinations of channel decoders and AV decoders to enable flexible notebook and desktop solutions for any region or form factor".

According to IDC's recent Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker survey, EMEA consumer and business demand for laptops rose above 30% in 2005, compared with an 8% increase for desktops.

This mass adoption of laptops coupled with advanced PC-TV features provides a cost-effective means of watching live sporting events and news while on the move.
