Flyback and power factor control come together

A NXP Semiconductors product story

Power chip integrates the flyback controller and power factor controller in a single SO16 package, enabling plug-and-play designs for power supply designers.

GreenChip III is the third generation of energy-efficient ICs from NXP for switch mode power supplies.

Designed specifically for notebook adapters and LCD TVs, the new GreenChip III TEA1750 reduces no-load standby power consumption to 200-300mW - far below US Energy Star requirements and a reduction of over 200mW in standby power consumption compared with conventional solutions.

The GreenChip III TEA1750 features an innovative design that integrates the flyback controller and power factor controller (PFC) in a single SO16 package, enabling plug-and-play designs for power supply designers.

Unlike traditional adapter solutions, the PFC switches to low-power burst mode during standby rather than shutting off completely.

This patent-pending solution allows the flyback convertor to operate more efficiently - in a range from 300 to 400V rather than powering up from 90V - enabling significant cost savings in required capacitors and magnetics, smarter system power management and increased reliability.

"Government programmes such as Energy Star and growing consumer awareness about the environment are making energy-efficient power adapters a 'must have' for laptops and other consumer electronics products", said Erwin Seinen, Marketing Manager, Power Solutions Product Line, NXP Semiconductors.

"The GreenChip III TEA1750 enables new levels of energy efficiency in notebook adapters, as well as lighter and more compact designs that make it easier for consumers to transport their laptops".

"Most importantly, by reducing the number of external components needed, the GreenChip III allows OEMs to become more cost competitive while maintaining a high degree of quality and reliability".

The GreenChip III TEA1750 supports universal mains supply operation (70 to 276V AC) and a wide Vcc range, eliminating the need for an external voltage regulator.

In addition to the burst mode PFC during standby, it provides several patented green features, including true valley switching and a high-voltage start-up current source.

The GreenChip III TEA1750 is available immediately.
