Chipset puts TV on mobiles
System solution combines everything an OEM needs to implement TV functionality in tomorrow's cutting-edge mobile systems, including hardware, complete DVB-H and DVB-T software stacks and security.
NXP Semiconductors continues to support the global deployment of TV-on-mobile (TVoM) with the introduction of the NXP TVoM HotPlug system solution.
The first of its kind in the industry, the system solution combines everything an OEM needs to implement TVoM functionality in tomorrow's cutting-edge mobile systems, including hardware, complete DVB-H and DVB-T software stacks and security.
The NXP TVoM HotPlug system solution also leverages NXP's highest-performance mobile multimedia processing technology; ensuring end-users receive the richest, highest-quality mobile digital broadcasts across multiple platforms including notebook PCs, smartphones and next-generation handset designs.
"As consumer demand for advanced multimedia services such as TVoM continues to increase, bringing compelling services to market quickly and easily will prove critical for manufacturers and operators to maximise opportunity and drive average revenue per user", said Mark Kirstein, Vice President of Multimedia at El Segundo-based analyst firm, iSuppli.
"Design platforms that offer integrated hardware and software, and immediate deployment, support manufacturers' demand for plug-and-play TVoM solutions with minimal customisation, development or delays".
The NXP TVoM HotPlug delivers a comprehensive stand-alone TVoM system, and enables handset manufacturers to quickly introduce TV services by combining tuning, audio and video decoding features, connectivity and support for any DRM standard, with the power to support both DVB-H and DVB-T.
Featuring the latest NXP audio and video processing technologies for enhanced picture and sound clarity, the solution also delivers reduced power consumption for longer viewing time.
"In helping to facilitate implementation across a myriad of devices, and overcome technical challenges such as power consumption, and picture and audio quality, NXP's wide range of TVoM products and services continues to nurture the burgeoning TVoM market and drive revenue streams for handset manufacturers, network operators and all involved in the TVoM ecosystem", said Ton van Kampen, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Business Unit Mobile and Personal at NXP Semiconductors.
"Furthermore, by tapping into NXP customer insights and R and D expertise, and by strengthening its work with industry partners, NXP continues to help propel DVB-H and DVB-T as global standards".
Based on NXP's BGT215 (for Europe, Asia and the USA) low-power front-end solutions for TVoM and the high-performance Nexperia mobile multimedia processor PNX4105, the TVoM HotPlug provides a complete system solution requiring no extra components or processing for the system baseband.
The BGT215 provides the TV tuner and channel decoder/demodulator, while the PNX4105 provides the source processing, including the power to run the DVB-H/T software stack, to decode the audio and video streams and to display video on the LCD with up to WVGA resolution.
Other advanced features include frame doubling and picture in picture, which allows two channels to be viewed simultaneously.
As a member of Mobile DTV Alliance, NXP supports the evolution of DVB-H and DVB-T and is committed to the development of innovative products and services to proliferate the consumer uptake of TVoM across the globe.
The NXP front-end solution, BGT215, offers the fastest way to add TV functionality to a cellular phone.
Low-power operation delivers longer battery life in the mobile environment and high integration in a module format enables a smaller design and limited external components.
Additionally, programmable options make it easy to support evolving standards and introduce upgrades.
Rounding out the company's TVoM product portfolio are the PNX4150 companion chip, which brings world-class image improvement techniques to mobile picture and video applications for an exceptional viewing experience, as well as the new TVoM HotPlug, which provides a complete system solution for the quick and easy implementation of TVoM functionality across multiple mobile platforms.
A live demonstration of NXP's TVoM HotPlug system solution will be featured on Booth 1803 at CTIA Wireless in Orlando, Florida from 27th to 29th March 2007.
