Pigeon Point Systems announces a micro-TCA initiative and delivery of initial Pigeon Point micro-TCA components.

Pigeon Point Systems, the leading supplier of shelf and board management solutions for AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC, announces a micro-TCA initiative and delivery of initial Pigeon Point micro-TCA components The micro-TCA architecture uses industry-standard AdvancedMC modules to implement small form factor, backplane-based systems for computing and communications

The micro-TCA specification allows for a highly scalable range of systems from nonredundant, low cost systems to carrier grade, high availability systems.

The specification is nearly complete within PICMG and Pigeon Point has been intensely involved in the completion push.

The Pigeon Point micro-TCA solutions include new variants of the Pigeon Point Board Management Reference (BMR) product family based on the Renesas H8S/2168 processor family.

The BMR-H8S-MCMC provides a hardware reference design, plus H8S-based firmware, for the MicroTCA Carrier Management Controller (MCMC) and the Pigeon Point micro-Carrier Manager.

The BMR-H8S-micro-ShM combines with BMR-H8S-MCMC to implement the Pigeon Point micro-Shelf Manager, running with the Pigeon Point micro-Carrier Manager on a single H8S.

The BMR-H8S-EMMC provides a hardware reference design, plus H8S-based firmware for an Enhanced Module Management Controller (EMMC).

The micro-TCA specification mandates an MCMC and a Carrier Manager on the MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH) module that provides management and fabric resources for each micro-TCA carrier, supporting up to 12 AdvancedMC modules.

EMMCs provide local management for supplementary resources in the carrier, such as cooling resources.

Integrating the Pigeon Point micro-Carrier Manager and micro-Shelf Manager to run on a single H8S processor makes for a very cost-effective MCH management implementation, ideally suited to the single-carrier micro-TCA shelves that are forecast to dominate micro-TCA shipment volumes.

Pigeon Point's micro-TCA components will be delivered over the remainder of 2006.
