Still under development, the pSEL Hybrid builds on the luminescent and reflective qualities of the display to deliver impeccable viewing.
Pelikon was among the four industry leaders handpicked for the Printed Electronics Awards in Europe, based on their achievements and contribution to the development of printed electronics.
"The applicants for the IDTechEx Printed Electronics Awards were of an extremely high standard, from successful companies as far afield as Korea and the USA".

EL display in up-to-the-minute design
The innovative DD101 watch takes advantage of the flexibility of Pelikon's electroluminescent display technology.
"However, we certainly rated Pelikon a world leader in its fast moving sector of printed electronics".
"It is an extremely impressive company", said Dr Peter Harrop, Chairman of IDTechEx and one of the members of the judging panel.
Pelikon was selected for successfully demonstrating that, by the addition of a liquid crystal layer which acts as a shutter system to incoming light, the emissive EL display can be visible in bright lighting conditions - indoors and outdoors.
The black liquid crystal layer becomes transparent when a high voltage is passed across it.
The display then shows the reflected light from only the intended lit area which can be read in brightly lit conditions.
"Pelikon is taking the lead in the printed electronics industry by demonstrating cutting-edge technology and manufacturing prowess in printed segmented electroluminescent displays", said Mike Powell, Managing Director, Pelikon.
"The award for Best Technical Development is a welcome reiteration of Pelikon's R and D strengths to deliver a solution for an industry-wide challenge for display technology".
"Our technology will enable consumers to experience advanced, intuitive products such as 'alive when touched' mobile phones and vibrant in-car displays".
Operationally, the liquid crystal and EL panel have proved compatible as they both require a high-voltage low-power input.
A key achievement has been to drive both of these from the same drive electronics thus producing a simpler, low component count solution.
The whole panel construction is still built up on a single flexible substrate and driven by a single, proprietary drive circuit, which is small and highly efficient.
The first Printed Electronics Awards were held as part of IDTechEx Printed Electronics Europe 2007, attended by 330 delegates from over 30 countries.
The award entries were adjudged by a distinguished panel from the industry, including Dr Peter Harrop, Chairman IDTechEx; Professor Bill Milne, Director Centre for Advancement of Photonics and Electronics, University of Cambridge; and, Nicholas Colaneri, Associate Director, Flexible Display centre at Arizona State University.
